2019 Highlights letter from CEO

Dear Valued Members,

I am so proud of the year we have had together. Our achievements this year are the result of our close collaboration with our Board of Directors and working for our members’ interests across Asia Pacific. By creating the ecosystems and infrastructure that support the long-term growth of the real estate industry in the region, we continue to expand our reach and thus, our membership network, especially in fast growing markets.

This year, we welcomed 16 new corporate members across the region, and formally launched the APREA China Chapter in May. The key to our growth has been our ability to balance continuity with change in a rapidly transforming industry.  We change by adapting our services to meet evolving members’ demands, innovating to deliver high-impact membership benefits, building content and expanding partnerships, as well as driving greater operational agility and efficiencies.

We continue to roll out curated services to differentiate ourselves in a way that underscores our raison d’etre:  a commitment to promote real estate as an asset class. In September, we introduced Knowledge Brief, a digital newsletter dedicated to our members’ views on relevant industry issues.  We held various activities such as large-scale conferences, investor outreach events, leadership dialogues, seminars, and study tours, which allowed our members to connect, learn, collaborate and grow and even paved the way for cross border opportunities. Additionally, we continue to deliver new digital capabilities and outreach initiatives including curated industry newsfeeds, podcast interviews and videos designed to upskill, and at the same time, provide membership visibility.

We enhance our business by diversifying our perspective: we look into new partnerships, new markets and new ways to build on our core competency as a leading pan-Asian trade group.  We have partnered with our members and industry associations on events and programs designed to address important industry themes. In the realm of ESG, we are proudly collaborating with GRESB and our members who are ESG pioneers.  We also inked a partnership with Preqin to create an index that measures the average returns earned by investors on their private capital portfolios, which complements our proprietary index on listed returns – the GPR/APREA Index.

We continue to advance your interests with policy makers.  As an industry association representing the Asia Pacific region, we have been providing continuous support to the Indian statutory authorities on best practices and investment rules to formulate their world-class regulations for REITs and InvITs.  We released the fifth version of the Indian REITs and InvITs Primer with PwC India.

In November, we were honoured to receive the Financial Education Champion Award 2020 from the Investor and Financial Education Council in Hong Kong. The award recognises our efforts and significant contributions to advance financial education and improve financial literacy across Hong Kong.

As we count down to our 15th year in 2020, we encourage you to be involved.  We believe the best way to make progress is to work together and develop actionable measures that promote transparency and the sharing of best practices so you can leverage the rising opportunities in the region.  I am excited and confident of the strong foundation we have built this year. I would like to thank the APREA team for their dedication and commitment as we enter the new decade. I would also like to thank APREA Chairman and Co-founder and Group CEO of ARA Asset Management Limited John Lim, our Board of Directors, all of whom have been vital in enabling us to create value.

Wishing you a wonderful holiday season and a new year filled with prosperity!

With great respect,

Sigrid G. Zialcita
